Things to consider when remodeling your bathroom
1. Set a budget
This might sound overly simplistic, but setting a budget is the first step to determining what’s possible with your bathroom remodel. Often, people start with a list of wants before realizing the true cost of the items on the list. We recommend setting your budget first and then prioritizing and pricing out the “must have” features of your new bathroom. If you get to the end of most important features with money left to spend, then move on to the “nice to have” features.
2. Think low-maintenance
It’s easy to get wrapped up in the way things look when they’re brand new, but it’s very important to do your homework on the longevity and maintenance requirements of your choices. Look for ways to make your bathroom as low-maintenance as possible – you’ll thank yourself later when you’re saving both time and money. For example, you might consider quartz counters instead of granite. Granite is porous; quartz isn’t, so it won’t crack or catch bacteria like granite.
3. Go neutral on expensive & hard to replace items
For items that can’t easily be changed, like tile and counters, we recommend sticking to neutral colors. That way, if you want to change the look of the room down the road, it will be easier to accomplish without the expense of redoing the tile and counter. Keeping neutral on these items will also help if you decide to sell your home down the road.
4. Don't scrimp on lighting
Your redesign plans should consider lighting. Whether it’s skylights or additional recessed lighting or both, a bright bathroom feels bigger and is safer.
5. Remember to add storage
The obvious places here are cabinets under the vanity, linen closets, and medicine cabinets. But also consider adding recessed cubbies in the shower walls for your bathing items for a cleaner look.
