Things to consider when remodeling your kitchen
1. Set a budget
This might sound overly simplistic, but setting a budget is the first step to determining what’s possible with your kitchen remodel. Often, people start with a list of wants before realizing the true cost of the items on the list. We recommend setting your budget first and then prioritizing and pricing out the “must have” features of your new kitchen. If you get to the end of most important features with money left to spend, then move on to the “nice to have” features.
You should plan for 29% of your total budget to be spent on cabinets, according the the National Kitchen and Bath Association – this will likely be the most expensive part of your remodel. Countertops will likely eat up around 10% of your budget. You can then plan for flooring, lighting, walls/ceiling, plumbing and faucets to make up from 4% to 7% each.
The rest of your budget will be used for design fees and installation costs.
2. Pick your appliances early
Choosing your fridge and stove early in the process will ensure the ones you pick will fit seamlessly into your overall design. The last thing you want is to have to redesign counters to fit an appliance that is too big or too small for the original space.
3. You aren't (necessarily) stuck with your old window and door configurations
If a window or door is coming between you and your dream design, it’s worth talking to your designer/contractor about the possibility of moving it. It won’t always be possible, but there are many times when it is. Obviously, this would increase the overall project cost, but you can’t always put a price on satisfaction.
4. Make sure you're 100% satisfied with the design before giving the green light
Changing plans in the middle of a project is one of the most common reasons for going over budget. By doing careful, thoughtful planning with the right professionals, you’ll ensure your project costs don’t balloon.
5. Remember to add storage if you can
You’re probably only going to do this once, so now is the time to look for ways to get the most storage space out of your new kitchen. Ask your designer for their ideas on how you can maximize storage space without sacrificing the overall look of your new space.
